Too Much Time in the Sun? Consider IPL Treatment

February 18, 2019

IPL treatment

Too much exposure to the sun can have quite a negative effect on your skin’s tone and texture. All sorts of hyperpigmentation, from freckles and age spots to injury and acne scars, become more prominent. The skin also appears dull in tone, and the surface acquires a rather brittle feature. Wrinkles can also become more visible. If this sounds like you, you may wish to consider an IPL treatment.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy differs somewhat from laser skin ablation. IPL therapy uses broadband light emission to direct energy through the epidermis and target darker, denser cells. The result of this treatment is an acceleration of replacement skin cells and a decrease in the prominence of any sort of hyperpigmentation. One of the bonus benefits is the stimulation of collagen and elastin production in the skin, and this helps smooth away age-related wrinkling.

Candidates for IPL Treatment

The ideal candidate will be a mature adult in overall good health. This treatment may not be suitable if you have been diagnosed with a serious skin condition. Overexposure to the sun’s rays can heighten the visibility of red and blotchy patches, cause freckles to darken, enlarge the size of skin pores, and cause the skin surface to appear brown and brittle. These problems can be treated effectively via IPL therapy. The treatment is also known as a photofacial.

Performing the Treatment

After we consult with you and examine your facial features, we will design a treatment schedule that involves several photofacial sessions. We can calibrate the device to deliver just the right combination of wavelengths. This calibration is based on your actual skin tone, skin thickness, and the depth of any discolorations. Remember, IPL treatment doesn’t treat the epidermis directly but rather addresses deeper-level areas of hyperpigmentation. Sun-damaged skin generally shows problems far down into the dermal layer.

We place the instrument directly onto your skin surface. When we flash the lamp, a pixelated spread beam of light penetrates right through your epidermal layer without heating it up. Instead, the energy is absorbed by cells containing pigmented components.

The affected cells, which may be part of an age spot, injury scar, or freckle, heat up and are slightly damaged. The body will quickly replace this damaged tissue with replacement cells that are far healthier. The device is moved slightly and the process is repeated. After about four or five treatment sessions, spaced a week or so apart, the facial skin is already showing visible improvement.

Enjoying the Results

The improvement in skin tone and texture continues for some time following the last treatment session. Capillaries have shrunk, and this helps diminish any redness or patch blotches. The skin also gets a bit tighter and firmer because of the increase in skin proteins. The sun-damaged, brittle and wrinkled skin is now smooth and radiant.
