Kybella: Is It Really a Permanent Solution to Double Chin?

You should love what you see in the mirror, no matter your age. Sometimes, the aging process, genetics, or former or current lifestyle can leave us wishing we could change certain details about our appearance. One attribute that leaves people most self-conscious is submental fat or a “double chin”. If you want to explore an option for eliminating your double chin, talk to the experts at Soza Clinic in Richardson, Bedford and Winnsboro TX about Kybella.

What Causes a Double Chin?

Submental fat is an extra layer of fat under the chin. Sometimes this can be caused by extra weight, but that’s not always the case. A double chin’s fat is notoriously stubborn to get rid of and can be resistant to diet and exercise. There is research to suggest this may have a genetic component, and that double chins can run in families. Poor posture could lead to a drooping chin, and with a generation of people leaning over their phones and computers, it may be on the rise.

Then there’s age. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity because our production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid decline. Collagen is responsible for a strong facial foundation, elastin allows our skin to bounce back and remain in place, and hyaluronic acid attracts and keeps moisture, making our skin dewy and supple. We lose about 1% of our collagen every year after we turn 18.

Not everybody with what looks like a double chin is a good candidate for Kybella because double chins can fall into three categories:

  • An extra layer of fat
  • Drooping skin
  • A combination of fat and loose skin

What Is Kybella?

Kybella is an innovate solution to eliminating the extra layer of fat under your chin. It’s made of deoxycholic acid—a manmade form of a substance your body makes to absorb digestive fats. It’s an FDA injectable approved to treat submental fat. When Kybella is injected into the treatment area, it attaches to the fat molecules and eventually dissolves them.

When these fat cells are destroyed, they’re gone for good. This is not a treatment you need to repeat every six or twelve months like other injectables. As long as you maintain a healthy weight with no real fluctuations, your double chin will be gone. The best part is that you can achieve a contoured jawline without surgery and the downtime associated with it.

This treatment is fully customizable to each patient’s specific area of concern. Kybella is administered in-office, and because it’s minimally invasive, most clients go back to their daily routines immediately.

What to Expect

Because Kybella is minimally invasive, there is virtually no preparation. The only instruction you may be given is to avoid taking blood-thinning supplements like Omega 3 and ginseng and over-the-counter medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen a week before treatment. You may also be asked to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your session.

On the day of your session, your provider will apply a numbing agent to the treatment area to ensure your maximum comfort. Once the area is numbed, you will be given a series of targeted injections. After treatment, you can go back to your normal daily activities. Some aftercare instructions may include avoiding direct sunlight and strenuous activity for a few days. The time of the actual treatment lasts about 20 minutes.

Results

After your treatment, the ingredient in Kybella goes to work. It attaches to fat cells, destroying them. Over time, the fat will be naturally metabolized by your body and expelled.

Some clients experience the results they’re hoping for after two sessions, while others may opt for up to six treatments to achieve their desired profile. Most patients achieve their desired results in 2-4 treatments. Your treatments will be scheduled a month apart from each other to give the injectable time to work so your provider can see the incremental results and tailor the next treatment accordingly.

Once you’ve achieved the contour and profile you’re happy with, that’s it. There are no maintenance appointments required.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

If your double chin results from excess submental fat, you’re probably a good candidate. If it’s a result of a combination of sagging skin and excess fat, you and your provider can determine the correct course of treatment to achieve the results you’re looking for. If the look of a double chin is only a result of sagging skin, other options may be the right choice for you as Kybella is specifically designed to address excess fat.

Only your provider can determine if you’re a good candidate for this treatment. Talk about your aesthetic concerns during your initial consultation and ask about your candidacy for this treatment.

If you and your provider decide this is the right treatment for you, but you would achieve better results using it in tandem with another treatment, or if another treatment is suggested altogether, explore your options. Several effective treatments can address the look of a double chin because of skin laxity. If your concerns are about other areas on your face or body, talk to your provider about the right treatment to address those.

Other Transformative Treatments

Wanting to look and feel good can apply to any part of your face and body. You don’t have to live with areas that cause you to worry about social situations or impact your self-esteem. You can control the way you look and your aging process.

Venus Versa

If you have sagging skin because of pregnancy, weight loss or aging, there are non-surgical solutions that don’t have to involve injections. Venus Versa is one of those solutions. It is customizable using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), NanoFractional Radio Frequency and Venus’ proprietary Multi-Polar Radio Frequency, Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields.

This treatment uses a combination of these light therapies to target deeper layers of skin and trigger the body’s natural healing process. The body then produces more collagen and elastin, helping to tighten loose skin. This treatment is virtually painless and is non-invasive, requiring no prep or downtime.

How Effective Is It?

How many treatments each client needs depends on the area to be treated and their desired results. Some patients report a noticeable difference after just one treatment. It is suggested to come back for maintenance treatments every six months but that will also entirely depend on your individual circumstance. Venus Versa can also be used to address:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Sun Damage
  • Visible veins
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Unwanted hair
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores

Microneedling

If you’ve looked in the mirror and thought you have an overall dullness to your complexion or see bothersome skin irregularities, ask about microneedling. During this treatment, a hand-held device loaded with hair-thin needles is passed over your skin creating micro-channels. When these are created, your body switches on its healing process, producing more collagen.

As those invisible micro-perforations heal, the newly regenerated cells are brighter, smoother and more evenly toned. The excess collagen works to fill in fine lines and wrinkles and can work wonders on acne scars or “pits”. Pitting is caused by cysts forming in the deeper layers of the skin. When the cyst is resolved, it leaves a space between the upper and lower layers of the skin resulting in a concave scar. The new collagen will fill those spaces up resulting in a smoother surface.

How Effective Is It?

After treatment, your skin will be more receptive to absorbing skincare products, so your provider may recommend specialized skin treatments. Microneedling is customizable and non-invasive requiring no downtime. Talk to your skincare specialist about this treatment if you have any of these concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Loosening or sagging skin
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Acne scars
  • Dullness

PRP

Also known as the “vampire facial”, PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. This is a natural, safe and effective treatment that uses the patient’s own blood to regenerate new cells. PRP can be used with treatments like microneedling so the plasma is better absorbed by the skin. During treatment, a small blood sample is taken and then put into a centrifuge. That process separates the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the particles in the blood.

The PRP activates your skin to produce more collagen. Its growing popularity is because of its simplicity and effectiveness. There are many benefits to PRP therapy, including:

  • Reducing signs of aging
  • Even skin texture
  • Even skin tone
  • Better skin hydration
  • Regeneration of healthy skin cells
  • Glowing and rejuvenated appearance

Injectables

Injectables are the most popular cosmetic treatment request, for a reason—they’re quick and effective.

Dermal Fillers

You’ve probably heard of dermal fillers like Juvederm. This treatment contains a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, the substance that aids in skin structure and hydration. Juvederm is formulated and FDA approved to be injected into moderate to deep facial lines and folds to provide immediate smoothing and plumping.

This treatment adds volume to smile lines, marionette line and the nasolabial folds on your face, leaving you with a naturally refreshed and more youthful appearance. Lips can thin as we age and start showing vertical lines, adding to an aged appearance. Juvederm can naturally plump lips and smooth out pesky lines. Results can last up to nine months, but if you continue with regular maintenance sessions, they can appear continuous.

BOTOX

BOTOX is a neuromodulator and works by addressing dynamic wrinkles at their source—movement. Over our lifetime, we make the same facial expressions and our skin becomes a sort of map for those repeated movements. BOTOX works to stop the impulse to the muscle that causes it to move. By temporarily blocking or halting its movement, the muscle relaxes.

When the muscles that cause wrinkles relax, the skin over them smooths. BOTOX is administered in a series of targeted injections and can take up to a week to begin providing results. This treatment is the most requested cosmetic treatment in the world because the results are transformative and natural-looking.

BOTOX results last between 3-4 months. Regular maintenance treatments can keep results continuous. The longer the skin is smoothed, the better the results will be. BOTOX is a great option for concerns with:

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
